Corroded-passenger car enclosure
- Causes
- Peeling of paint on the interior surface of the car, causing steel structure of the lift to be corroded
- Irregular cleaning or replacement – worsened by graffiti, littering
- Lights are damaged (usually if not guarded)
- Inadequate ventilation, fan not working
- Vandalism
- Description of defect
Paint finished that peeled off from the substrate is a sign that it has lost its adhesion to the metal substrate. Some possible cause of paint peeling is because of inadequate surface preparation, where the paint is applied on an oily surface that prevent bonding between the paint layer and the substrate. Inappropriate use of type of primer also can be the cause of the defect.

- Diagnostic/testing method
The strength of the car wall shall be tested to ensure the car is capable to withstand the forces that are equivalent to the impact of a person pushing against the wall (EN 81-20:2014)
- Good practices
The deflection of car-frame shall have a minimum safety factor of 5. The enclosure walls shall not show a deflection more than 15 mm or resulting in permanent deformation when subjected to a force pf 300 N applied on an area of 5 cm² at right angles to any point on the wall enclosure.
Finishing materials for enclosures shall be metal or non-combustible material complying with BS 476: Part 4 and minimum surface flame spread rating of Class 1. Wall finishes in the form of thin sheet not more than 1.0 mm thickness mounted on a non-combustible substrate will not subject to the requirement of surface spread of flame provisions provided that this exception shall not be apply to the fire lift.
No plastic materials shall be used for finishing materials (SS550).
- Corrections
For elevators that installed in a scarcely attended public areas such as public housing, urban infrastructures, and social houses, it is recommended to use a vandal resistant certification elevators complying EN81-71 standards.
Stainless steel finishing is recommended to be used for a more durable elevator car [26]
