Cast Iron Pipes
Defect and Repair
Defect & Possible Causes | Repair | |
Leakage caused by pipe corrosion When the pipe is seriously corroded, it has possibility of damaging the wall of the material. If proper maintenance programme or auditing system exists to detect and repair the water leakage of overhead pipes, subsequent damage by rust like this can easily be avoided. |
Remove the corroded and damaged pipe and replace.
Replace using corrosion-resistant materials: Replace underlined galvanised iron pipes with copper, stainless steel, high density polyethylene, unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) or epoxy-coated galvanised iron pipes. |
Temporary/emergency repair
Ultimately, any leaking pipe or fitting will need replacing. There are temporary measures that will serve a permanent repair is done.
If the pipe cracks for several inches or more, a new section will be needed, which usually requires a professional plumber who has proper tools & equipment.
- Using tape (usually polyurethane resin base) with water as catalyst
- A hose clamp compressing a rubber pad can cure pinpoint leaks or cracks.
- Pipe clamp bolted over a rubber pad seals larger cracks permanently
