Case 2

Cause of Defects

  • Improper fixing of floor trap may provide passage to water seepage through screed layer laterally. Passage of water has brought soluble salts in the concrete over the surface where they crystallized, known as efflorescence.
  • Hydraulic pressure caused by water on the paint film of lower unit slab may leads to peel off the paint film and form blisters.
  • Detailing of the joint between wall and slab may not meet requirements to provide water-tightness of the joint.
  • Relative movement between the two elements (slab and wall) may lead to fail the waterproofing membrane at the joint its water-tightness mainly depend on the membrane system.
  • Wear and tear of waterproofing membrane could lead to the failure of the water-tightness of the joint. Generally the durability of waterproofing membrane is 10-15 years.
  • Poor workmanship may affect the water-tightness of the construction joint.
