Composition

Concrete tile are composed of a mixture of Portland or other hydraulic cements, fibres, sand aggregate, colour oxides and water, extruded under high pressure.

Colouring

Manufacturers create colored concrete tiles by either adding pigment to the raw materials during the mixing stage (prior to extrusion) or by applying a concentrated slurry coat of pigment to the top surface after extrusion and forming. Both types of tiles are cured at 45 deg C to ensure that the concrete is properly cured and the color remains as intended for the style of tile.

In terms of appearance, integral colored concrete tiles provide more subtle color. Over time, they may experience some surface lightening but will retain the base color indefinitely. High contrast, bright colors are more often produced with slurry-coated concrete tiles, but slurry coated tiles can show some wear of color over time. Periodic cleaning can rejuvenate and prolong the surface finish of any type of tile – clay or concrete; however, proper care is essential, as the surface of any product left un-attended will show signs of aging.
