Cause of Defects
In this case, the weakness is mainly associated with the screed, which was found to be porous and with inadequate shear and bond strength. Most of the tile de-bonded with the failure mode within the screed. Test results indicated that the cementitious or polymer content was low, improperly mixed and cured.
The de-bonding may occur between or within any of the interfaces, between elements or within an element, or a combination of the above. Examination of the failure mode is hence important for devising the optimum remedial action.
