Fire Protection

Grading/ Installation

Grading for installation of detector and alarm

Factor Grading criteria Grade
Wiring Neatly run with supporting interval as per manufacturer’s instruction.

Special checking for concealed places. For e.g. above false ceiling it should be fastened to the structure – should not be lying on the panels.

Preferably protected by sleeve when cables pass through walls.

Joint should be minimum and protected in a junction box.

Yes:5

No:1

Mounting Should be securely mounted. Else vibration from structure may spoil a sensitive instrument.

Proper alignment (esp. for flame detector). Else its function is disabled.

Yes:5

No:1

Test The system is checked through the following test(s) as required by authority:

Three-second response test for manual call point.

Battery removal test.

Simulated mains failure test

Sounder circuit fault test

Detector circuit fault test

Detector removal test

Note: testing should be carried out at the remotest part with closed door condition. Special care for acoustic partitioning should be taken. After test the system should be recalibrated and made ready for use.

Grade

Hydrant and accessories
Storage Parts stored in a clean, dry and safe place. It prevents loss, deterioration, damage of pipe, pipe threads fittings, couplings etc. Yes:5

No:1

Install Mounting height of hydrant and breeching inlet should be strictly maintained.

Installation should be secure and safe. Special consideration should be given to the potential damage sources:

External pipe : mechanical damage, falling debris.

Underground pipe: vehicular traffic, pressure & thrust from ground.

Internal pipe : gas, electric pipeline, structural vibration

Connections and position of valves as per specification.

Risers anchored securely before any pressure or flow test is performed.

Made operable immediately after completion and testing. That protects the building under construction.

Fire hydrant Wet test Condition of pit, frames, cover, surface paving around edge of frames.
Flushing Flow and pressure of outlet connection.
Dry & wet riser Visual inspection General condition, earthing, venting requirement
Hydrostatic test Leakage, blockage under operating pressure.
Static pressure test Leakage esp. at joint or landing valves.
Flow test Errors like undue pressure loss in riser
Note: For taller buildings, each zone of wet-rising main to be tested separately. After testing the pipes should be reset and made ready for immediate use.
Fire hose
Base work Reel brackets are fixed firmly else hose may not be used properly.

Stored in a cool, dry place (BS ISO 2230).

Commissioning Before using, the hose is flushed out to remove any harmful matter especially for automatic hose reels.

Flush out test: the tubing is run out to remove any kink or knot and the valves and nozzles are fully operational. After the flush out test, the hose is drained and returned to the drum and all the valves are closed.

Hydrostatic test as per codes (e.g. BS 1402 Rubber and plastics hoses and hose assemblies).

Grade

Mounting Exactly according to the design approved by the authority and instructed by manufacturer. The general guideline as follows (NCCER, 2007, NFPA 13): Yes:5

No:1

Type Mounting position
Spray (SP) Horizontally with deflector towards window / wall
Upright spray (SU) Horizontally with deflector away from window/ wall
Pendent sidewall (WP) Hung like pendent and oriented to window / wall
Conventional (CUP) Only beneath the roof overhangs.
Supports Before fixing the adequate strength of supporting elements are checked.

Cross checked if supports hinder sprinkler head.

Adoption of approved fastener and fixing method.

The design may need to undergo a verification test with appropriate load without shock for a min period of 30 sec.

Yes:5

No:1

Supply network The whole supply network (pump, piping, valves, tank etc) constructed / installed as per approved design.

Special attention to be given for alignment of piping, installation of valves. Often the gasket, washer or straps for locking are found omitted due to carelessness.

Before putting into service the whole system should be checked and approved by the competent person.

Grading for installation of portable extinguisher

Factor

Grading criteria

Grade

Mounting Small (≤ 4 Kg): Hung on wall with hanger or bracket such that the handle is about 1.5m from floor.

Hangers should be securely fixed.

Heavier (≥ 4 Kg): Carrying handle should be about 1m from floor. The arrangement should be such that the person carrying it should not be hurt.

Parts should be attached as per manufacturer’s instruction.

Protection Accessible yet protected from misuse or theft is achieved by:

In vandal proof zone: unlocked cabinets or free standing on floor or shelves.

Else: locked cabinets with glass fronted receptacles to hold the key.

Grading for installation of fire door

Factor Grading criteria Grade
Fire door
Storage & handling Delivery should be planned so as to reduce the storage time and also installed as late as possible. It prevents damage from subsequent construction activities.

Protected from direct sun, excessive moisture and corrosive or staining material.

Leaves are laid flat on bearers to keep them away from ground contact. A protective wrapping is beneficial.

Yes:5

Fixing Exactly same as of tested prototype i.e. as / manufacturer’s instruction.

Door frames installed during wall construction should be thoroughly grouted in cavity as deep as possible with corrosion proof anchor.

Screws for attachment should be driven properly, not hammered or placed in other position.

Latch / bolts at proper height and with adequate clearance for easy operation.

Checking Min closing force maintained as per width.

Gaps (8mm at bottom and 3mm at other sides) may require seals for adjustment on both sides. No over-mortising is recommended.

Care taken to avoid any mismatch of components, interchange of components of different doors, alteration of door swing etc.
