Floor and Wall Finishes

Ceramic Tile

Homogeneous Tile

Granite

Marble

Paint

Plaster and Skimcoat

For each material under the floor and wall finishes, a brief description of the material is given and further information on its types, durability, properties, maintenance and cleaning methods; and the types of failures and repair methods are discussed. The floor and wall finishes include manufactured tiles (i.e. ceramic tile and homogeneous tile), natural stone (i.e. granite and marble), plaster and paint.

Tile Explosion / Popping

Dislodgement of tiles occurs due to natural deterioration and differential thermal expansion or contraction of the tiles, which results in a loss of adhesion between the tiles and the screed surface over time. Significant changes in temperature can “cause more stress to be built up” beneath the tiles, contributing to the loss of adhesion.
