HVAC

Construction/ Installation

The components of HVAC systems are factory assembled and tested product. But the final assembly requires professional skill and the whole system should be tested before commissioning. Any damaged part or faulty installation should be rectified and tested again. AHU and FCU come as complete and tested assembly with statically and dynamically balanced extended shaft complete with pulleys, integral motor and in-built belt guard. Chillers assembly is also complete product with all components and refrigerant charge. The whole unit should preferably be checked under design condition. Similarly cooling towers also need testing before commissioning.

Grading for installation of AHU and FCU

Factor Grading criteria Grade
Housing
  • Free from scratch, dent or rust.
  • Access door gaskets are intact and doors close tightly.
  • Connection between duct and AHU is air-tight with the use of tapes or sealant of approved quality.
Yes: 5 No: 1
Filter
  • Handled with utmost care to avoid denting, damage or soiling.
  • Frames are secured to housing and pressure gauge fitted at right place.
Yes: 5 No: 1
Fan & motor
  • Correct alignment of fan and motor.
  • Proper tension in min 2 (preferably all) belts of Vee-belt drive. There should be one set of spare belts supplied by manufacturer.
  • Correct rotational direction, frequency and quiet operation of fan.
  • After mounting on isolator on a common platform, the block is levelled and shipping removed.
Yes: 5 No: 1
Cooling coil
  • Coils installed with airflow in same direction as indicated on the casing.
  • Headers as per specification – no welding, soldering allowed.
  • Coils are clean and fins are in good condition – no denting.
Yes: 5 No: 1
Drain pan & pipe
  • Gradient and support as per specification for complete drainage of condensate. Gradient checked by spirit level.
  • No visible sign of leakage, dripping, seeping or damaged insulation. In case of doubt the pipes should be pressure tested.
Yes: 5 No: 1

Grading for installation of chiller

Factor Grading criteria Grade
General
  • No visible sign of damage to the unit.
  • Installation on concrete housekeeping pads & isolator is levelled. A vibration analysis should be conducted.
  • Construction debris and shipping material removed.
  • Insulation applied over entire surface of the chiller components, 100% of contact surface. Seams and joints are sealed

Motor & controls
  • Proper attachment of thermometer, gauge, valves and purge units.
  • Functioning of electronic refrigerant leak detection system and automatic exhaust system
  • Motor and bearing greased.
Yes: 5

Fluid system
  • Temperature and pressure of refrigerant in evaporator and condenser.
  • Temperature and flow of water entering and leaving the evaporator and condenser.
  • Sufficient refrigerant installed and there is no leakage.
  • Pipes are tightly fastened to right port via flexible connection or flanges.

Grading for installation of an IR distribution system and ducts

Factor Grading criteria Grade
Duct condition
  • Galvanisation on inner surface should be smooth and fault free to prevent dirt accumulation.
  • For ceiling plenum, surfaces should be smoothly plastered and painted.
  • Insulation should be free of fault.
  • Substrate must be cleaned before applying any adhesive.
  • Adhesive to be applied evenly on both sides of the fibre insulation and the aluminium foil before sticking together.
Yes: 5

Duct fixing
  • Pre-fabricated ducts should be installed within seven days after they arrive at site. This prevents any damage to the ducts.
  • Anchorage to structural member should be with strong metal hanger or bracket at a distance < 4m from extreme end and with flexible connection.
  • Opening position should strictly follow the specification.
  • To avoid injury, rivets are used for jointing near access panel and otherwise the screw size is limited to 13mm.

Tests
  • Ducts: if required, hydrostatic testing should be done before application of external insulation (SMACNA, 1985).
  • VAV box: factory made, calibrated and tested VAV terminals should be again field-tested (PWD, 1997) for air flow accuracy, pressure independence, leakage and damper actuator function.
  • Whole system: Checked for tightness, vibration, rattles and proper functioning. Air flow should be balanced in the ducting system.
