Breakage of suspension ropes

  • Causes
  1. Overstressing tensile failure
  2. Inadequate / improper lubrication or throwing up of lubricant (Suspension rope only)
  3. If material not rust resistance, it corrodes on exposure to dust, dirt, and water. A proper lubricant also prevents corrosion
  4. The wire undergoes frequent bending or undesirable friction due to unsuitable pulley geometry or groove

  • Description of defect

When a lift car or counterweight fall at a high speed, the resultant force will exceed the tensile strength of the ropes, causing the ropes to be completely damaged. In a normal condition, when the load is slowly applied, the wire ropes will withstand a considerable stress. But, in the case of too-rapid acceleration or deceleration, it will result in overstressing and breakage.
