Building
The pre-war shophouse at Geylang is being used as a library for religious scriptures. Mould was found growing rampantly in the mediation room located at the upper storey. Recorded temperature and relative humidity were the highest among all cases, which in turn accelerated fungal growth. Although the room had no alternative natural ventilation, the air-conditioning was seldom used, saving operational costs. Low air speed can thus be attributed to the lack of ventilation and air filtering
Observation
The old building age contributed to building defect occurrences due to material deterioration. Exposure to the warm and humid climate had caused the structural roof to give way to the assimilation of rainwater into the meditation room. The porous ceiling boards have been subjected to an excessive amount of water, causing the bulging of the boards due to the weight of the absorbed water.
Numerous water stains can be noticed on the ceiling boards, with mould on wood furnishings of the room as well.
