Alligatoring
Introduction
Also known as crazing, alligatoring paint is named after its resemblance to the skin of an alligator. It is observed as a cracking pattern within the paint. This can be attributed to several reasons including the poor bonding of paint layers. An example of this would be the usage of hard and rigid paint coat over a softer and flexible layer of paint. Another potential cause for this would be the application of a top coat before the undercoat has had sufficient time to dry. For some paint types, natural aging and temperature fluctuation can cause the paint to lose its elasticity and result in cracking.
