Acoustic Emission
Principles
Acoustic emission is a nondestructive means of evaluation which passively “listens” to sound waves generated by stresses within a material. It is done by loading the material beyond their elastic limit. Any cracks would be detected by means of sound waves and converted to a voltage by piezoelectric transducers; computerized equipment is used to measure and record the resulting voltage vs. time information.
