Introduction

Type of Building: Public residential flats

In this case, “brown stains” are found on the surface of the bricks. They may be vanadium efflorescence, or possibly manganese staining.

This type of stain is the result of the use of manganese dioxide as a coloring agent in the units. This staining problem is closely related to the general efflorescence problem, since it is the sulphate and chloride salts of manganese that travel to the surface of the brick and are deposited on the mortar joints.
