If there is a chalk, it must be removed prior to the application of any paint as paint will not adhere to powder. Firstly, scrub off chalk with detergent and water, then rinse thoroughly (Figure 1a to d).

Secondly, prime these areas with top quality oil-based primer or a stain-blocking latex primer.

Where slight chalking has occurred, wipe of the loose particles and then repaint.

In the case of heavy chalking, remove the paint film completely, clean the surface with water and allow it to dry overnight before repainting.

The use of a rather oily undercoat would resist chalking more readily.
