“Crickets” (water diverters) can be installed, it is designed into the upslope side to avoid situations such as this. Crickets can be installed with either plywood below built directly onto the deck, or on top of the roofing membrane in the form of tapered insulation, and simply flashed over. In situations where the water ponding is too serious, re-roofing will be more economical that to install crickets.

Tapered Insulation can be used to acheive the effect of forming a gradient to allow water to drain towards drainage outlets and discourage any water ponding. They are generally manufactured in 4ft x 4ft size. To provide different roof slopes, tapered boards with different tapers are available. The tapered boards commonly used are 1/8 in. per ft, 1/4 in. per ft, 3/8 in.per ft, 1/2 in. per ft. The gradient on roof deck is assembled by using tapered boards as well as boards of uniform thickness which are called fillers.

The figure below shows how tapered board insulation can then be confiugred to form valleys on flat deck roof surfaces to direct water to drainage points.
