Introduction

Type of Building: Public

The stainless steel P-trap under wash basin has corroded in this case. Stainless steel is the generic name for a number of different steels used primarily for their resistance to corrosion. This corrosion know as pitting corrosion of stainless steel formed green rust on the pipe surface, producing localized rust blooms as illustrated in Figure 1. After the pit initiates, propagation of the pit may occur and progresses until a through-pipe penetration occurs. Alternately, if the pit is repaired, the activity ceases and no propagation occurs.

In this case, pitting corrosion could be started due to presence of high contents of sulphide and chloride ions in the environment since the building is located in an industrial area.
