Vibration

In addition to being an annoyance to building occupiers, vibration may be a serious concern to the structural integrity of a facility due to its possible adverse long-term effects. This is particularly crucial to weaker structures and sensitive buildings such as historic buildings and monuments. Vibrations may also interfere with sensitive processes, such as those in hospital operating theatres, scientific research laboratories and high-tech industries. The frequent internal and external sources of vibration are shown in the figure below. Common instrumentation used to measure such motions includes gyroscopes, accelerometers and magnetometers.
