Cause of Defects
Localised staining affects the granite tiles at the façade area directly below the signage. Staining of granite in this case may be due to the attachments that are holding the signage to the façade. Although it is good practice to allow a clearance between the signage and the façade by not fixing the signage directly to the wall, staining will most likely still occur due to the accumulation of dirt at the attachment points.
The attachments holding the signage creates small corners where dirt can accumulate and later be washed onto the granite panels.
The signage also provides horizontal and sloping surfaces for dirt particles to settle easily. Runoff from the signage may have also deflected back onto the façade due to wind force.
Staining on a facade has a lot to do with the pattern of rainwater runoff, which in turn is dependent on the facade configuration, colour, texture, as well as the “roughness” and “water absorption” properties of the materials used:
