Cause of Defects
This can be due to the use of inferior quality materials as the finishing membrane, leading to early membrane failure. Poor workmanship may have resulted in failure (less supervision at site). When liquid-applied membrane is used, there may have been inadequate coats of waterproofing applied. (Industry standard = 3 coats of overall thickness of 1.2mm minimum). Insufficient bitumen between felts.
Improper embedment of felts because of:
- Inadequate brooming or underweight mopping.
- Application of inadequate heated bitumen.
- Excessive traffic over the roof’s surfaces.
