Case 3

Cause of Defects

  • Concrete may be carbonated by the carbon dioxide from vehicle exhaust. This infused carbon dioxide reacts with the calcium hydroxide in concrete thus neutralising the alkaline environment.
  • Honeycombs in the concrete structure may accelerate the carbonation process, resulting in cracking due to volume increase from the formation of rust.
  • It is also possible that moisture from the soil causes this corrosion induced crack when concrete, exposing the reinforcement to moisture, is excessively porous.
  • Poor maintenance might cause the origination of water seepage due to the failure in taking adequate corrective maintenance for the crack promptly.
