Cause of Defects

Microbial growth is more of a physical appearance defect than a structural defect. The cause of this defect is due to the absence of coping on the parapet wall, thus this allow rainwater to run against the surface of the parapet wall. Dyes released by the algae’s metabolism may subsequently lead to permanent staining on the wall such as the greenish stains as shown in plate 2.35. In this case, the defect is attributed to bad design and the lack of maintenance
