Cause of Defects

Alligatoring is caused when smaller cracks allow rain to go into the gravel substrate. This loosens the gravel underneath the asphalt layer. When traffic rolls over this loosened area, the asphalt pavement caves in a bit, causing the pavement to crack in an “alligatored” fashion.

The alligatoring process continues on and on as more water enters the new cracks and develops potholes. This defect is mainly caused by continued oxidation, aging and embrittling of the membrane which are resulted due to membrane long exposures to the sun’s high energy ultraviolet radiation.
