Introduction
Type of Building: Residential
Peeling/flaking of paint coating over slab is shown in this case. This has happened below the shower unit at upper wet area. In this case, the defects is believed to be mainly attributed to the seepage of water from the structural slab below shower area. The trapped water would build up capillary pressures under the paint coating. This pressure may be capable of pushing the paint film off the surface as illustrated in the animation [1-4].
Even though good quality concrete itself is a good water-repelling material, many factors such as concrete mix performance, vibration etc., can affect the water tightness of the system [5-7]. However, waterproofing system too plays a greater role in achieving the integrity of the system to enhance the water-tightness.
