Tile – Crack
Introduction
Type of Building: Public
It is a well-established fact that good quality tiles laid on a wall or concrete floor slabs can provide an excellent, long-serving surface which is both durable and attractive. However, in the above case, scratches and cracks appeared over the wall tiles nearest to the slab. From the study, it was found that the scratches and cracks had to do with the cleaning behaviour where the brooms were allowed to hit the wall tiles nearest to the slab during the regular wet washing of the slab.
In general, tiles should perform to withstand service loads from cleaning equipments to prevent scratches and cracks. On the other hand, it is very important to use correct cleaning equipments and methods to prevent any damages to the tile.
In addition to the above, the rows of tiles nearest to the wall and floor interface are subjected to high stressed cause by the differential movements of each of the element in the tiling system in both magnitude and direction.
