For universal columns and unfilled structural hollow sections, there are a number of ways to protect the columns, including casing by plasterboards, cementitious sprays, intumescent coatings or pre-formed casings, such as tube in tube systems.

Structural hollow sections have the advantage that fire protection material like concrete can be filled inside the columns. With the used of concrete as internal protection of a structural hollow section, external protection might not be necessary at all. The concrete filling will support the load when the temperature has reached the point where the load bearing capacity of the steel is under the actual forces imposed on the structures.

Hot rolled steel and structural sections refer to hot rolled steel property. Concrete refer to reinforced dense concrete property.
