Maintenance and Cleaning

Types Maintenance / Cleaning Cleaning Frequency
Hot dip galvanized steel to ASTM E 1514-98 or BS EN 10142 or BS EN 10147, minimum 275 g/m² zinc coating weight. PVC/ Plastisol coating, 200 microns nominal thickness [1] Inspection:

Annual inspection and maintenance in accordance with BS 5427: Part 1, Table 9. [1]

Renewal of side/ end lap seal as necessary

Cleaning:

Regular cleaning with non-alkaline detergent or simply by water

Polluted/ marine areas/ heavy industrial: every 3 months (4x/year)

Other areas: every 6 month (2x/year)

Hot dip aluminium-zinc coated steel to ASTM E 1514-98 or BS EN 10215, minimum 150 g/m² zinc coating weight. Acrylic/ polyester/ silicone polyster/ PVDF/ PVF2 coating, 25-50 microns nominal thickness [1]
Acrylic/ polyester/ silicone polyster/ PVDF/ PVF2 coating to ASTM E 1514-98, 25-50 microns nominal thickness [1]
Hot dip galvanized steel to ASTM E 1514-98 or BS EN 10142 or BS EN 10147, minimum 350 g/m² zinc coating weight [1]
Mild steel not relevant to BS, or coating/ surface protection less than above specification [1]

Notes: In cases where the regular maintenance referred to above does not remove all dirt which may have adhered to the surface of the paint, the following procedure should be carried out:

  1. Wash the surface with a mild solution of pure soap or mild non-abrasive kitchen detergent in warm water.
  2. Application should be with a sponge, soft cloth or soft bristle nylon brush, and should be gentle to prevent shiny spots.
  3. Surface should be thoroughly rinsed with clean water immediately after cleaning to remove traces of detergent.
