Introduction
Type of Building: Public Residential Flats
A crack is found near to the window frame. This crack may result from the differential thermal and/or structural movement between the brickwork and the window frame. Corners of openings such as a window are subjected to higher stress concentration. Stress concentrations occur when the flow of stress is disrupted by irregularities in the geometry or material of a structural component. These disruptions can be caused by holes, especially at sharp corners. This may be part of the reasons why windows of airplanes are rounded [1].
In cases where structural cracks are suspected, a thorough assessment and specialized repairs to maintain the safety and stability of a building are required. For non-structural cracks, cosmetic repairs are sufficient.
