Cause of Defects
Fixtures such as iron cramps and dowels that are attached to external wall surfaces are subjected to weathering and corrosive forces. If left untreated and exposed, the fittings may damage the stonework badly upon deterioration. The rust products may stain walls and affect the aesthetic quality of the wall.
- Insertion of fixture at the joint area rather than on the stone panel itself is recommended since it will not result in defects such as cracking or chipping of the stone if drilling is not done properly.
- Likelihood of rust staining is the same regardless of area where the fixture is installed.
- Insertion into the jointing area affects the flow of runoff along the joints.
In this instance, water washing over the fixture is increased since waterflow is more concentrated along the joints. Rusting of the fixture takes place at a more rapid rate. The rust products will be deposited on the stone wall subsequently. Pattern of rust stains corresponds to the flow of runoff.
The introduction of a steel fixture onto the granite hence introduces it into an acidic environment and prompts rapid corrosion.
